It took me a long time to buy one of these because of the exceedingly high price and eventually the deciding factors were simply that: 1 we never got real chips as my wife would not use the electric deep oil fryer for calorific and cleaning reasons; and 2 a black model was introduced. You will note that this is all very logical indeed of course.
My wife initially threw a wobbler when it arrived in my absence ("Something else to clutter up my benches - where are we going to keep it?" Answer "On the bench by the window with the bread maker and coffee machine". She then threw another wobbler when I told her the price, even though it was only 149GBP with a free Tefal non-stick frying pan and a lovely substantial 160 page soft back recipe book.
The concept and machine itself are brilliant - it cooks almost anything in minimal 1 or 2 measuring spoons (14 or 28mls) of oil or no oil at all by blasting hot air over the food which is shuffled around by an ingenious paddle device. It cooks from frozen too.
The book includes recipes from all over the world for beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, chicken, fish, prawns, vegetables, fruit and lots more nice things. There are many different recipes for potatoes and chips. Despite all those my favourite is my own - chips or wedges in their skins flavoured with sea salt, pepper, garlic, mixed herbs or tarragon and ras el hanout, a Moroccan spice blend including rose petals.
The machine has been used nearly every day since it arrived, being one of the best cooking devices I have ever purchased along with the slow-cooker.
I have only three minor criticisms: 1 the lid section and pan itself are of very light construction, the plastic lid especially being somewhat flimsy, spoiling an otherwise well made product; 2 the pan is too small to cook a decent-sized meal for 3 people; and 3 the small pan means that if full chips and other items can end up being pushed up on to the area between the pan and base unit it fits into (where there is a gap that small things can fall into) hence not cooking unless put back immediately.
Shop around as this item comes a lot cheaper than the 200GBP recommended retail price. God knows where some of the almost universal $300 "discounted" price here comes from. The Tefal shop was the best value for the limited edition black one at the time of my purchase at 150GBP post-free with a free frying pan (how many they are limited to is not stated - dare I ask as they are still freely available - a blue one next perhaps followed by all other colours of the rainbow?). Now I see it's back to the full 200GBB price with no freebie. Nevertheless buy one - you won't be disappointed. The plain white one is at least 10GBP cheaper than the black one!
Finally, in response to the comment in another review, no the timer has not been improved on the latest models and despite what is said of the filter, invisible fumes can still set smoke alarms off and you can smell the cooking but it smells lovely.

This is an unbelievably spectacular product. It makes the best fries imaginable. It is difficult to believe how well it works. It cannot be improved upon and it is worth twice the price.

I bought the Actifry with the mistaken thought that I could make the same foods one would make in a deep fryer but use less oil. While I was wrong in my thought--the manufacturer's description is completely accurate. It makes great french fries with minimal oil, and beyond that is a great low fat "cooker" or "saute-er". The reason my thought was erroneous was because I was thinking of breaded fried food like chicken and vegetables, but in fact, this appliance doesn't seem to be appropriate for this use (unless you are using prepackaged frozen, in which case, the unhealthy stuff is already in it) But to my surprise, is it the best ever for cooking things I might otherwise do on the stovetop, but with the following advantages:
1) Minimal oil used but tastes just as good as if you used more
2) No need to preheat
3) No need to worry about the correct temp (there is no temp to set)
4) No need to attend it--you just throw your stuff in, add the oil, push the button and walk away.
5) Very easy clean up. The cooking pan is light and leaves no food residue (at least so far)
This product turned out to be something other than what I thought it would be, but turned out to be one of the best cookers ever!

I am based in the UK have used the Tefal Actifry now for just over two years. We use it most weeks, and find it invaluable.
1. It cooks great chips (fries). Really useful if you like proper English chips rather than the more traditional shaped skinny fries perhaps. As I am on a weight loss plan - the fact that you can have chips with barely any more calories than a boiled potatoe (only one little scoop of oil cooks a whole family's chips) is fantastic.
2. It cooks Chicken drumsicks, sausages, scampi - flawlessly. Pretty anything that we would try to grill or fry in the UK works fine.
3. It cooks great roast potatoes too - just preboil your potatoes for a few minutes and then cook them like chips - much faster and calorie lighter that cooking with your joint, and much MUCH nicer than nasty frozen tasteless roasties!
My elderly parents were so impressed with this - and believe me money is tight for them - that they bought their own!
Reliability. Neither we, nor my parents have ever experienced paddle difficulties at all, however the one issue I did experience was that the catches on the lid broke and I had to order a replacement lid. I think this was more down to the exhuberence of our 9 year old in making her own chips than necessarily a problem with the machine. It was easy, quick and cheap to get a replacement lid - I think £14 and I haven't experienced the problem since.
We love this so much, that we really want to buy another one to keep in the US to save some money on food when we are staying there. But the current price in the US is a big issue.

If this thing cost $99.99 I'd say get one, just for the fries but I think it's way too expensive for what it does. It makes very good french fries but so does the oven if u use 1T oil, doesn't really taste like fried. I made chkn wings, breakfast sausages & sweet potato fries so far, wings & sausages came out very, very good BUT no better than the usual way, sweet potatoes fell apart, tasted ok but weren't fries, might've cooked them too long. I was going to send it back but SO said to keep it, he likes the way french fries come out
